Mönichkirchen is a place with a long tradition as a retreat for rest, summer holidays and experiencing nature. Since the early 20th century, the climatic health resort has attracted guests from the cities with its temperate climate, its special air quality and its setting in the midst of nature. This history remains an essential part of the village’s identity to this day.

01

The village development project builds on this tradition and translates it into a contemporary future. Mönichkirchen is to be developed further as a modern, lively retreat – with an infrastructure that meets the needs of residents as well as those of guests. The aim is to preserve the special atmosphere of the place while improving public spaces, orientation, the quality of outdoor spaces and tourist facilities in a targeted way.

02

At the centre is the redesign of selected squares, street spaces, junctions, village entrances and critical points along the municipal road, i.e. the main road through the village. Based on existing analyses, studies and sub-projects, concrete spatial and design measures are developed that strengthen the village’s character, improve the use of public areas and make the connection between the Unterort, the village centre and the access to the Alm more tangible.

03

An essential element of the project is the development of an innovative wayfinding and orientation system. It is intended to run through the village as a design and functional thread, create orientation and make Mönichkirchen’s tourist identity visible. The themes of alpine pasture, forest, air, water, hiking, winter sports, enjoyment and movement form possible reference points for a site-specific design. Cultural references, for instance to Anton Wildgans, can also be incorporated into the concept.

04

The design of the public spaces should be inviting, robust and in keeping with the place. Contemporary furnishings, seating, design elements, low-maintenance planting and a clear visual connection through the village are envisaged. Particular attention is paid to safe and attractive pedestrian connections, upgrading the village entrances, improving places to linger and making the Schwaig, or Alm, more perceptible within the village fabric.

05

The honeycomb serves as the overarching symbol: it stands for nature, structure, stability and communal fabric. From this idea emerges a design approach that does not seek to reinvent Mönichkirchen, but to order, strengthen and make visible its existing qualities.

The project thus sees itself as a careful yet forward-looking development of the village. Mönichkirchen is to preserve its uniqueness while developing further as an attractive, liveable and easily navigable place of nature and recreation for residents and guests.
