The Wastls-Haus is a listed farmhouse within the ensemble of the local-history and open-air museum in Lehn, a district of Längenfeld. The municipality wants to reclaim it as a living part of the museum: space for temporary exhibitions in the attic, an inn, workshop, kitchen and sanitary facilities on the ground floor – a house that is not merely visited but used.

01

The real building task lies less in the design than in the choreography: heritage protection, local tradespeople, a deliberately tight budget spread over several years and a long construction period all have to be reconciled. But that is precisely where the project’s strength lies. The stages make it possible to work with the existing fabric rather than against it – each construction phase begins with what the previous one taught about the house. And the value added stays in the valley: it is Längenfeld hands that work on the Längenfeld museum.

That this works also has to do with the client: a mayor with an interest in culture who carries the project over the years. Public projects rarely fail on money alone – they fail when nobody sticks with them. In Lehn, someone sticks with it. The project is under construction.
