Redesign of the Village Square and Music Pavilion – Innichen, Innichen – image 1 of 5

The project concentrates on the essential elements that characterise Innichen and specifically the Pflegplatz as the village centre: stone, water and history.

01

Stone forms the lasting and permanent, that which gives the place its shape.
The Pflegplatz is divided into sections, paved in the same material but in different laying patterns. This carpet of fragments comes together as a new, unified whole and creates the link to the existing pedestrian zone and to the Senfterplatzl. Matched to the size of the market stalls, the square is spanned by an infrastructure grid of 6.25 m x 6.25 m for water, electricity and light.

02

Water is the dividing and shaping element on the square. The former Wiere, the millstream that once ran across the square, is taken up as a line. The Wiere not only supplied the craftsmen of Innichen but also marked the physical separation between secular and ecclesiastical power, between the market area and the “cathedral precinct”. At the same time, the line of the Wiere symbolises the course of the Via Claudia Augusta Altinate.

A second line at right angles to it stands for the Via Iulia Augusta, which once ran through the Puster Valley. Historic Littamum, today’s Innichen, lies at the crossing point of these two Roman roads. The two axes are set into the surface of the square as metal strips naming important stations along these routes.

04

The new pavilion stands at the intersection of these two axes. Designed in stone, shaped by water. A massive monolith of artificial stone with a coarsely bush-hammered surface. The pavilion unites the required programme and new offerings. The 12.5 m x 12.5 m block opens to the north as a stage. Its surfaces and height-adjustable platforms are designed to meet the acoustic requirements of a brass band and to allow use as a stage and event space. To the south-west is the kiosk, which serves both the adjacent street and the small newly created square in front of the Postkapelle. The most important new attraction is the drinking hall on the Pflegplatz. Here the five springs of Innichen can be sampled: Kaiserwasser, Lavaredo, the sulphur spring, the iron spring and Candida.

The new Pflegplatz becomes a meeting zone. Parking for bicycles and cars is provided in the area in front of the bank and the town hall and is released according to the frequency and use of the square. For temporary use, mobile wooden street furniture is planned in keeping with the existing pieces.
