Converting the Wachenhauser Hof

A single-unit farmhouse from 1757 whose historic appearance is largely unchanged – a sensitive conversion into a home and sheep farm.
The Wachenhauserhof is a historic single-unit farmhouse dating from 1757 whose original appearance has largely survived to this day. The clear division into living quarters, stable and threshing barn, the craft-based construction and the characteristic façade elements make the farmstead an important testimony to regional building culture.
Particularly striking is the east façade with its dated timber-lattice gable (Bundwerk) from 1757. On the west façade, the picturesque “Türkenhäng”, a drying rack for maize, forms another essential feature of the existing building. Inside, the roof structure contains structural elements and beams from the Baroque period, while the cellar and the ground-floor hallway, with their 19th-century vaults – so-called “Prussian caps” – make the various construction phases of the house legible.
The aim of the refurbishment is the careful preservation of the farmstead’s design, structural and formal qualities. The existing building is developed sensitively and adapted to today’s requirements for living and use, while the historic structure and the defining elements of the farmhouse are retained.
The southern living quarters are modernised and reorganised. Living spaces are created on the upper floor and children’s rooms on the ground floor. The former threshing barn is adapted into a self-contained area for the parents. At the same time, agricultural use with sheep farming remains part of the overall concept.
The conversion combines heritage conservation, contemporary living and farming use into a respectful way of building on within the existing fabric. The interventions deliberately take a back seat, strengthening the existing substance rather than overwriting it.
