Steinwandhof – Prags

The Steinwandhof stands prominently on a hill and, in terms of building structure and volume, takes its place among the surrounding existing fabric of partly historic farmhouses and dwellings of the hamlet. The architecture of the existing building, with its well-proportioned punctuated façade and regular window axes, articulated rough-render surfaces and timber veranda on the south side, corresponds to the traditional rural building style of the region.

The farmstead was for a long time owned by the Curia of Brixen and is therefore very representative in its fittings and exterior. The interior of the building is characterised by historicist fittings with uniform door and window elements, decoratively designed tiled stoves and above all panelled Stuben with historicist and neoclassical decorative elements. The existing fabric of the farmhouse, in its current structure and fittings as well as its façade design, dates from the late nineteenth century (inscription in the Stube “1873”). An earlier building, which cannot be dated more precisely, was presumably later extended northwards by two window axes.

The fundamental ideas are the preservation of the old building fabric and, at the same time, the aesthetic enhancement of the village and landscape through appropriate exterior design and positioning. On the one hand, the farmstead is to provide contemporary living space for the client, and on the other it is to be used for farm holidays with riding stables and housing for other animals. The farmhouse is to be upgraded as simply and authentically as possible. The high quality of the historic farmstead is underlined by the expert restoration of fittings and surfaces and the sensitive insertion of new, restrained furniture.
