Refurbishment of Toblach Primary School

Toblach's primary school, built in 1938, was originally an elongated building with the gymnasium to the west, classrooms on the south side and a wide circulation corridor on the north side with an entrance area given particular design emphasis. The eastern part was partly cellared and legible as a half-storey on the south façade. The exterior was characterised by the clear structure of the large multi-part window openings. These were grouped in bands with a grey central mullion and solid window sills and framed by white banding. The façade was painted yellow.

Refurbishment and conversion of a school
Umbau Grundschule Toblach

The present project provides for the extension of Toblach primary school together with an energy and acoustic refurbishment of the existing building. Adaptations to current legal requirements on accessibility and fire protection must also be carried out. The rooms are to be adapted to the growing number of pupils and to the new needs of open learning across rooms.

01

The new main entrance is reached both from the school square and, coming from the south, via the basement level. Here lie the rooms shared by the German and Italian primary schools: centrally, an entrance area with cloakrooms and sanitary facilities, the staff room and classrooms.

02

The classrooms on the upper floors are reached by two staircases, one on the north side of the school and one in the west wing. Along the south axis of the central wing lie the shared areas that can be flexibly arranged for open learning; the classrooms are accommodated along the north axis and in the side wings, those of the Italian primary school in the west wing.

The attic in the side wings is not converted and is used for storage. Above the central wing, the two small teachers‘ flats to the east remain, while the caretaker’s flat is located in the western part.

04

On the north façade, the external stair to the music room is demolished and relocated inside the building; on the west façade, the existing entrance to the Italian primary school is abandoned. In its place, a new entrance is created here for out-of-school use of the gymnasium and as access to the music room.

On the façades, the existing openings are essentially retained. On the north façade the entrance area is emphasised by a vestibule projecting from the façade; on the south façade large openings are created in keeping with the existing articulation.
