Fischerhäusl – Innsbruck

The building is conceived as a reduced monolith that fits respectfully into the historic ensemble while at the same time establishing itself within this setting as a confident witness to its own time. Its remarkable position in the town centre calls for high-quality solutions in materials as well as in detailing and execution.

In the historic town centre, the Fischerhäusl creates a reduced building volume that fits respectfully into the ensemble that has grown over time while remaining legible as a contemporary architectural intervention. Its particular position in a sensitive urban context calls for a restrained, precise and high-quality solution in materials, detailing and execution.

01

The new building is conceived as a monolithic element that does not compete with the existing fabric but strengthens its spatial and historical qualities. In contrast to the previous situation, the existing town wall is not overtopped. Instead, the building nestles against the wall and deliberately holds back in height and presence.

02

A key design principle is the continuation of the sloping top of the wall into the roof surface of the new building. This creates a calm, homogeneous overall figure in which wall and new building relate to each other without losing their independence.

Fine shadow gaps mark the junctions between old and new. The differentiated yet carefully coordinated materiality keeps the historic town wall and the new building legible as independent architectural fragments. The result is a precise intervention that connects existing fabric and the present – restrained in expression, but clear in its stance.
