Neighbourhood Development Obsteig – Site Selection for Childcare
The aim of the project is to secure high-quality, needs-based childcare. We see the project as an opportunity to create a village centre.
The aim of the project is to secure high-quality, needs-based childcare. We see the project as an opportunity to create a village centre.
By identifying a suitable site, we want to ensure that the needs of everyone, and of parents and children in particular, are met as well as possible.
The municipality of Obsteig faces an important decision: choosing the optimal site for its future childcare facilities. To support this process, a comprehensive study of alternatives is being carried out. Its purpose is to analyse the various sites, set out their advantages and disadvantages and examine possible options for subsequent use. Rough cost estimates are also being prepared to take the financial aspects into account. Yet the planning goes well beyond purely economic considerations.
Obsteig grew historically as a linear village along the road and has no explicit centre. This fact opens up interesting possibilities within the neighbourhood development. Potential scenarios in which such a centre could emerge need to be examined. Not only the building structure and typology play a role here, but also the qualities and characteristics of the village space. An urban design dialogue is essential if the needs of the municipality and its residents are to be properly taken into account.
The current situation makes clear the urgent need to renew and extend the existing kindergartens and the primary school. Both are too small and in need of refurbishment. Rising pupil numbers in particular pose a challenge. The inspection reports document the shortcomings and underline the urgency of taking action. A container solution for afternoon care shows that short-term measures are necessary while long-term planning gets under way.
The condition of the existing facilities varies. The Holzleiten kindergarten, which once served as the “old” primary school, was converted in 1982 and extended in 1997. Today 34 children attend it. The listed Schneggenhausen kindergarten temporarily accommodates 20 children, but its operating permit runs only until 2028. Obsteig primary school was built in 1964–1966 and extended in 2002 in response to rising pupil numbers.
Criteria for the site analysis
Overall, the municipality faces a complex challenge that must consider not only the needs of its current residents but also the long-term development of the village. The decisions taken now will influence not only the quality of childcare but also shape the face of Obsteig for years to come. It is a process that calls for careful planning, comprehensive analysis and close cooperation between the municipal administration, the planners and the citizens.
