Ausserlipper Hof – Kalkstein
Sometimes building on does not mean preserving
Sometimes building on does not mean preserving: when the fabric no longer holds, a farmhouse can also be born anew – as a house that knows its place.

Sometimes building on does not mean preserving: when the fabric no longer holds, a farmhouse can also be born anew – as a house that knows its place.
The old farmhouse in Kalkstein was decrepit – too decrepit to be saved at reasonable cost. The private clients opted for demolition and a new building in its place: a new farmstead, conceived as a high-quality apartment house. The ambition was clearly stated: to combine tradition and modernity – no nostalgic replica, but no alien object in the Villgratental either.
The answer lies in the construction itself: timber construction and solid masonry work together, just as the farm and living quarters worked together in the old farmhouse. And in its floor plan, the project resolves the apparent contradiction of alpine building: compactness and generosity at once. Outside, the dense, weather-beaten silhouette that crouches into the slope – inside, rooms that open up rather than confine.
In this way, the new building carries on what has shaped the place: not the old beams, but the attitude behind them – building with the slope, with the climate, with the scale of the valley. The project is under construction.
