Municipal Office in the Listed Pfleghaus

The “hochfürstbischöflichen-brixnerischen Pfleggerichtshaus Schloss Anras”, the former seat of the Prince-Bishop of Brixen's district court, is a cultural monument of exceptional significance and a defining feature of the village. Since 1989, part of the building has been owned by the Willy Messerschmitt-Stiftung and, following the completion of the general refurbishment in 1997, has been used for cultural purposes as a museum and gallery. The foundation leased the building to the municipality; the municipality's own operating association was responsible for the programme.

Part of our commission, and the basis for the conceptual considerations in this paper, was to carry out a needs assessment exploring the municipality’s cultural potential and interests; to assess the location of Anras and the character of the Pfleghof with regard to their fundamental suitability for cultural, and in particular museum, uses and offerings; to survey, analyse and evaluate the building in terms of its typological and topological particularities and its accessibility; to assess the existing rooms in the Pfleghof with regard to their suitability for cultural, and in particular museum, uses; to analyse and evaluate the spatial situation drawing on architectural, building-historical and building-physics expertise; and to define the requirements and expectations placed on the Pfleghof and its use.

The conversion project now provides for the municipality of Anras to move into the first floor. A café and three apartments will be created on the ground floor. The second floor and the attic are to be used for exhibitions and events.
