Conversion of the ARZ – Allgemeines Rechenzentrum

The original building of the Allgemeines Rechenzentrum in Innsbruck was completed in 2000 and had a glass façade with shading louvres in the cavity of the façade. Because of persistent overheating problems, the client decided ten years later to refurbish the building and initially contacted our office only for the design of the façade.

Comfort and Sustainability
Our office nevertheless decided to bring in Transsolar KlimaEngineering, who developed a sustainable, energy-saving concept for the building based on the laws of thermodynamics and physics. Together with the experts at Transsolar KlimaEngineering, the correct transparency and energy absorption of the glazing were selected in order to achieve an ecologically and economically high-quality building with a high level of user comfort. Our office’s task consisted above all in the communication between the client and Transsolar KlimaEngineering.

01

Although the new glass façade of the ARZ was already able to counteract overheating of the building, the client opted to fit the window fronts with external venetian blinds. Our office was commissioned to design the colour scheme of the solar shading and chose a gradation in five different shades of grey, intended to reflect the acceleration and braking of the vehicles on the Südring, where 50,000 cars pass by every day. In this way our office accompanied the conversion of the headquarters of the Allgemeines Rechenzentrum in Innsbruck and, together with the clients, developed a new façade including climate concept, solar shading and glare protection. Since the merger of RZW and VDG in 1993, the ARZ, with its two sites in Innsbruck and Vienna, has made a well-known and respected name for itself in Austria as a centre of competence for IT services in the banking sector, but also for hospitals and public administration.
