Spallartgasse Site

Planning and designing a new urban quarter is a complex task that must take into account both the needs of the residents and the environment. In the case of Spallartgasse in Vienna, as architects we faced the challenge of how the city could be densified and extended while preserving the park-like character of the site and making the natural space accessible to future generations.

Residential park on the site of the General-Körner barracks in Vienna's 14th district

Our central approach was to leave the majority of this unique urban natural space in its natural state. By integrating paved timber walkways, which at the same time serve as protective and boundary elements for nature, residents can live directly in a piece of woodland and experience nature.

01

In an urban context it is important that the new residential quarter integrates seamlessly into the existing urban structure. We therefore ensured that the quarter not only enlivens Spallartgasse and Leyserstraße, but also enhances the surroundings with local amenities and a publicly accessible park.

02

In the built interventions, our focus was on translating the obvious qualities of the large housing complexes of the 1970s into the logic and economy of the building plots. The individual building elements were designed to blend harmoniously into the green surroundings of the park and to allow a mix of housing types related to the park.

Overall, the Spallartgasse project is an exciting example of how intelligent planning and design can create a new urban quarter that meets the needs of both its residents and the environment. It shows how a successful balance between urban development and nature conservation can be achieved to create a liveable environment for all.
