Lecture „Weiterbauen am Denkmal“ (Building On at the Monument) – Tyrol 2021

In November 2021 we gave the lecture „Weiterbauen am Denkmal“ (Building On at the Monument) as part of a Tyrolean architecture series. The lecture addressed the central question of how listed buildings can be developed further under the conditions of climate change and changing requirements of use – without losing their character.
Three aspects were at its core: first, the methodological question of when building archaeology begins and how its findings feed into design decisions. Second, the energy challenge – traditional materials follow their own building-physics logic, which is not always compatible with modern energy standards. Third, the question of reversibility: interventions in monuments should be planned so that later generations can correct them.
We illustrated the lecture with examples from our own work – among them the Pfleghaus Anras, the Wastls-Haus in Lehn and several farmstead refurbishments with heritage relevance. The discussion that followed confirmed that heritage conservation in the Alpine region is not only a professional question but also a social one.
