Weissenhof 2027 – competition site visit in Stuttgart, March 2022

In March 2022, we took part in the Weissenhof competition site visit in Stuttgart. The urban design ideas competition “Weissenhof 2027” had been launched at the start of the year, jointly by the City of Stuttgart, the State of Baden-Württemberg and the International Building Exhibition IBA’27.

The brief concerned the contemporary further development of the Weissenhof Estate and its urban surroundings. For a practice rooted in the Alpine region like Stadt:Labor, the task was particularly appealing: the Weissenhof Estate is an icon of classical modernism, and its further development touches on questions we also know from our regional practice – how do you deal with high-quality, identity-defining existing fabric without either romanticising or overwriting it?

The competition was decided in June 2022. A total of 35 teams from Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Spain, Poland, Bulgaria, France and the USA took part. The 2022 site visit was the starting point for our own engagement with the task.
