Refurbishment of a house
WHG-Somavilla-48-1

The house is adapted for the next generation to move in without fundamentally altering the building structure: the external appearance of the building is retained and the street frontage remains entirely unchanged. In the garden, the changes can be read in a new terrace and enlarged window fronts.

01

The entrance area is relocated to the garden-side basement and brings the surrounding nature indoors with the installation of untreated birch trunks as coat racks and a green felt niche. On the ground floor, an open kitchen flowing into the living room creates generous free space.

02

The addition of a terrace with a carport beneath it adds a further outdoor living room in summer, making direct access from the living rooms to the garden possible for the first time. The first floor accommodates a gallery level with library, a room taken over from the
existing building in the style of a turn-of-the-century gentleman’s salon, and a guest room. The family’s private rooms and bedrooms are located in the attic storey.

The heterogeneous picture, shaped by the traces of the building alterations left by each generation since the house was built at the end of the 19th century, is homogenised and harmonised by built-in furniture. Smooth white fronts create uniform surfaces, enlivened by colourful niches. These are lined with various materials such as felt, velvet, black glass and gold leaf and, in keeping with the client’s cheerful nature, are designed in colour.
