Urban Development Brixen North

The entry with which we won the competition for the urban development of Priel in the north of Brixen in 2005 provides for raising the level of the square (currently purely a car park) by around 4 m by means of an inserted deck. The parking level is retained beneath it but is replaced in the active townscape by the new level. On this level a generous leisure area is created that can be understood as a recreation zone close to the town. The new level also forms the ground floor for the planned development, which programmatically will consist of a music school, volumes for a new hotel building and housing. For this new development we are currently working on the feasibility study for the optimal distribution of the volumes. Part of the expansion zone has already been realised: Brixen's new climbing hall opened in spring 2012 and represents a first stage of the town's expansion in this area. “The project impresses with its simple and clear definition of the square’s edges, which is able to absorb the fragmentation at the edge of the town. The transition between the dissolving old town and the adjoining green space is defined by creating a change in level as an urban interface. The sparing and precise arrangement of the building volumes produces a well-proportioned square at the entrance to the town centre.

01

From the upper level of the garage, visitors reach the new urban interior at the same level, from where the view is led, as a matter of course, over the low-rise buildings to the silhouette of the old town. The existing individual buildings are not concealed; they are integrated in a natural way. The path connections towards Altenmarktgasse and the Postpark are treated as equals. […]

02

The specifications for the buildings are limited to the articulation of the building masses and thus form an ideal basis for the implementation plan. Clear framework conditions are formulated for further planning, leaving sufficient scope for detailed execution.

Owing to its correct fundamental decision, this project [proves to be], of all the projects submitted, the best basis for further development.”
